Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. And I literally write it in 5 minutes. The prompt this week is … Design.

While there were miraculous births in the bible, none more miraculous than the birth of our Savior. The design and creation of the plan of his birth starting as a foreshadow in Isaiah. “For unto us a son is born, for us a son is given”…..(Isaiah 9:6). While reading the first chapter of Matthew, I was struck at the lineage of Jesus. Through the slew of “begots”, I found out that Jesus was born into the lineage of Joseph, not Mary. While the emphasis is on Mary the mother of Jesus, the silent Joseph is the reason that Jesus was chosen for Mary in the first place. I believe that God created this by design. To be born into the family of Abraham and David, Jesus had to come into an unlikely source. Joseph was not a king or of important significance. In fact he is mentioned only a few times in the bible. Just a regular carpenter from a legacy of kings and leaders in the Jewish faith. Mary was ordinary herself. She wasn’t married to Joseph and was not of a huge family name. Their appointment was by God alone.

We are created by design to be extraordinary and to do extraordinary things for God. Whether it is to be a farmer or a teacher, or even a mother. God uses the ordinary to be extraordinary for him and to spread an extraordinary Gospel of his goodness and faith. Just as He called an ordinary Mary and Joseph to parent his Holy and Begotten son.

This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1:18
