Five Minute Friday — Hoping for the Once and Living for Today
Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. And I literally write it in 5 minutes. The prompt this week is … Once.
Typically the word ONCE is used in a sentence that is meant for a future action with the promise of a positive change. ONCE I get my car, I will have more freedom. ONCE I get this job, I will have more money to save. ONCE the weather gets better, I will exercise more. ONCE I find a husband, I will feel more love in my heart.
When I find myself using this word in this context, I begin to ask myself, well what can I do today? For example, sure I may not have a car, but today I can take the Metro to go downtown to see the monument or I could go for a hike in my neighborhood. That will give me some freedom.
Or, I have my job now, what I can do today to save money? I can cut back on Starbucks or try to cook my own dinner about two days a week or coupon.
Sure the weather being better will help me to exercise more, but I can go outside in my clothes and walk around in the snow. Take in a hike by the huge pine tress and watch residue of yesterday’s snow on the tree. While the sun is out it gives way to take in the beauty of the snow melting with the the clear droplets of water off the green pine needles and the take in the fresh crisp air.
Also, I can do exercises at home in my house to get the blood flowing.
ONCE I find a husband, I will feel complete in my family. While that may be true, what can I do now in my singleness to be a blessing to others? I can serve more at church and I can give more.
While ONCE is a great word and something to hope for, let’s try to do our best to be content for today.
